Holiday in the Heartland

August 23-26, 2017  |  Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Based at the AAA 4-Star Hotel at Kirkwood Center, the event will include all the usual “Holiday treats” plus a few extra-special ones. This unique location is a teaching hotel for the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management students at Kirkwood Community College. It includes The Class Act — a full service restaurant, multiple meeting rooms, banquet seating for up to 500 and a secured parking area.

The Kirkwood campus provides a perfect setting for special activities. Tech Sessions will be held in the nearby Automotive Collision Repair lab and Autocross aficionados will test their talents on the expansive concrete Truck Driver Training range. Plans now call for the Concours to be held on a downtown bridge spanning the Cedar River with lunch served in the adjacent Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum.

The rolling Iowa countryside provides a setting for special driving tours. We will feature both guided and self-guided tours. The guided full day drive will work its way to the “Little Switzerland” bluffs above the Mississippi River using parts of the Great River Road system. The guided half day drive will explore historic sites along the Cedar River including stretches of the original Lincoln Highway. A special feature will be a tour of the National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS), a transportation safety research center at the University of Iowa. NADS utilizes its suite of world class driving simulators and instrumented vehicles to conduct research studies on driver distraction, automated vehicles and simulation of on-road vehicle performance.

Cedar Rapids was the hometown to Grant Wood, best known for his iconic painting, American Gothic. We’ll do a local tour including a stop at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, which houses the world’s largest collection of his works. Nearby is the Attic Studio where he painted American Gothic as well as his 3-story stained glass Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum tribute.
